Group A:
Poland vs Russia (1:1)
National Stadium, Warsaw.

This is the big one in Group A and tensions were high on the streets of Warsaw before the kick-off.

Poland looked really sharp and full of desire in the opening twenty-five minutes. All that was missing for their efforts was a goal.

Andrei Arshavin’s runs on the left weren’t going unoticed for Russia and Alexander Kerzhakov was again offered a few half-chances.

When the goal came, it was Russia who took the lead.

Marcin Wasilewski conceded a free-kick that Arshavin took his time with. Alan Dzagoev timed his run perfectly and helped the ball inside the far post with his shoulder.

A perfectly executed free-kick but a little harsh on Poland.

Half-time: Poland 0 – Russia 1

Poland started the second-half with fire and passion; determined to take the game to Russia for the home nation.

Poland’s captain, Jakub Blaszczykowski, gave the Polish fans what they wanted; cutting inside the area and unleashing a left foot shot into the back of the net, just twelve minutes after the restart.

The tempo seemed to slow down in the final ten minutes. Russia seemed content to top the group on four points but the Polish fans would have liked the win.

In the end, a fair result to a very entertaining game.

Final Score: Poland 1 – Russia 1
