Group C:
Italy vs Croatia (1:1)
Miejski Stadium, Poznan.

Croatia could have been the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals if they won this match; with a game to spare.

Sometimes it doesn’t look like there’s going to a  goal in open play, no matter what the statistics say.

When the game is tight and there’s a lot at stake, the last thing you want to do is concede a free-kick on the edge of your penalty area. Croatia did; a little over five minutes before the break.

If anyone needs to be feared, standing over the ball in such a tempting position, it has to be Andrea Pirlo.

Looking slightly crouched – as opposed to the stiffer Jonny Wilkinson stance Portugal’s Ronaldo likes to apply – the talented Italian did what he does best.

Pirlo’s foot made contact with the leather; the Croatian wall jumped; and the high, curling ball was probably only sighted by Stipe Pletikosa when it flashed between his outstretched hand and the post.

Half-time: Italy 1 – Croatia 0

Croatia looked a little more hungry in the second half. Pressing the Italians for quite a while it wasn’t a surprise that the second goal of the game was an equaliser.

Mario Mandzukic popped in at the far post to net his third goal of the tournament for Croatia.

Flares on the pitch, thrown from the Croatian end – behind Gianluigi Buffon – caused the game to be halted for a moment.

Final Score: Italy 1 – Croatia 1
